A look into a wastewater sampling project to help characterize the opioid epidemic in the U.S. including a review of recent literature on wastewater-based epidemiologic methods and development of a sampling and monitoring protocol for pharmaceutical opioids in wastewater.
Learning Objectives:
Discuss the necessary frequency and timing of sample collection.
Discuss how to identify appropriate sampling locations
Discuss how wastewater sampling results can be paired with public health data to help a community characterize the opioid epidemic in the community.

Sirese Jacobson is an Environmental Scientist supporting projects relating to NPDES permit compliance and water quality. Primary support areas have included compliance inspections; data collection, analysis, and management; research; and technical writing. She works directly with state and industry representatives conducting inspections of regulated facilities and compiling inspection reports. Ms. Jacobson has provided pretreatment program support to six U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Regions and has conducted more than 45 pretreatment compliance inspections and audits.
