This is the second Webinar in a series that describes Advanced Water Treatment processes primarily associated with wastewater reuse.
The webinar will cover membrane processes that are used in advanced water treatment, microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and reverse osmosis. The webinar will highlight process description, descriptions of the membranes, monitoring strategies used in these treatment processes, process parameters, instrumentation, and critical control points.
The overall goal is to provide operators with the information needed to be able to understand why certain conditions in the treatment processes occur.
This webinar, along with experience and additional training, may prepare you for the Advanced Water Treatment Operator® Grade 3 certification exam.
After completing the webinars, you should be able to:
- Distinguish among various membrane treatment processes in terms of performance range and O & M procedures
- Describe microfiltration (MF)/ultrafiltration (UF) processes
- Identify critical control points for microfiltration/ultrafiltration processes
- Describe reverse osmosis (RO) processes
- Identify critical control points for reverse osmosis processes
- Compare and contrast instrumentation systems associated with membrane technologies
- Define performance parameters of membrane processes such as flux, recovery, permeability, and rejection
- Outline residual disposal and associated regulatory requirements
ABOUT AWTO® CERTIFICATION
Drinking water, wastewater or water reuse operators working at facilities using advanced water treatment technologies and related control processes may be interested in earning the new, voluntary AWT Operator (AWTO®) Certification.
AWT Operators protect public health by ensuring a supply of safe and high-quality drinking water from advanced water reuse facilities.
Operators who currently hold a Grade 3 certification for Wastewater Treatment Operator or Water Treatment Operator in California or Nevada are eligible to apply for the AWT3 exam. Be sure to download and read the candidate handbook at AWTOperator.org.

John was a tenured professor of water resources at a colleges in Florida an Georgia, and has taught microbiology, environmental science, biology, and water resource treatment technology. He has a PhD in environmental sustainability and a PhD in biological sciences, and an A level water and wastewater treatment operator license in Florida. John has worked as a project manager for CH2MHill, and as a technical assistance provider and trainer for the Rural Water Association.
Dr. Fred Gerringer

Dr. Fred Gerringer serves as Hazen and Sawyer’s West Region Water Reuse Practice Leader. He has over 20 years experience working in the public and private sectors on water reuse, drinking water, and wastewater projects throughout California. He has managed projects at all stages of development, from initial planning and pilot testing through design and construction.
Dr. Gerringer was a member of the committee that developed the AWWA CA-NV and CWEA Advanced Water Treatment Operator Certification Program and is the current president of the Los Angeles Chapter of the WateReuse Association.

Troy Walker is the Water Reuse Practice Leader and Membrane Technology Leader for Hazen and Sawyer. He has over 25 years experience in the piloting, design and operation of an advanced water treatment system for potable reuse having worked on projects in his native Australia, Asia and the United States. He has a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of New South Wales, Australia.
Registrants who view the full recording to see the slides and hear the audio will receive 2.4 contact hours towards CWEA's ECI & AWTO certifications. It is not possible receive contact hours for both attending the live webinar and viewing the recording.
