P3S22- Data Driven Pretreatment & Collection System Management

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) around the world are impacted by pollution events on an almost weekly basis. While the expected frequency, duration, and intensity of events may vary from geography to geography, and even between neighboring plants, no WWTP is immune from the effects of contaminated wastewater impacting their processes. Within collection networks, conditions can change from moment to moment, and regularized methods of sampling and condition monitoring – ‘composite’ and ‘grab’ sampling, which see conditions reported at regular intervals – are unlikely to capture a truly representative picture of the environment within a system. Rather than sampling to a schedule, smart sampling units are deployed within a network, equipped with condition sensors calibrated to detect pollution events as they happen. Using this system, utilities can build a more accurate profile of pollution events within their network, supporting targeted responses to changes in network conditions and proactive wastewater management practices, including advanced source control and pollution prevention. Case studies from Israel, Italy, UK and the US will be presented, covering various applications, such as: • Improving sludge quality by detecting the source of elevated heavy metals discharge in Italy • Improving tertiary effluent quality (used for agriculture) by detecting the source of saline discharges in Israel.

Learning Objective(s): After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:
• The Audience will learn how wastewater quality early warning system can support decision making at the treatment plant to prevent upsets and incompliant
discharges.
• The Audience will learn how a network visibility tool can improve workforce communication, namely between wastewater treatment plant operators and
collection system operators/ pretreatment managers.
• The audience will learn about the differences between a random sampling program to smart, triggered by event sampling

Registrants who view the live webinar to see the slides and hear the audio and then enter the correct attention check code (directions below) will receive .6 contact hours towards contact hours towards CWEA's CSM,  ECI & EIT certifications.

To receive your contact hours for viewing the live webinar, please note the one (1) attention check code that will be displayed during the webinar in the top left or right corner of the presentation for approximately 90 seconds.  Please enter this code in the Attention Check Code component under the "Contents" tab.

Please note, all user activity of CWEA certification holders on the Online Wastewater Education Network is subject to the CWEA Code of Ethics standards for professional conduct and ethics. Certification holders should receive credit for a training only once within the same contact hour period. Any attempt to undermine the certification process may be subject to ethics procedures and possible sanctions. It is not possible to receive contact hours for both attending the live webinar and viewing the recording.

Once you have entered the correct attendance check code, you will be able to create and download an electronic "Certificate of Completion" under the "Contents" tab.
