This session includes the following presentations:

Rehabilitating Aging Collection Systems While Minimizing Related Impacts
This project involves rehabilitating an aging collection system using a variety of innovative methods including trenchless pipe bursting for replacing an existing force main, cured in place pipe for re-lining leaking gravity sewers, and constructing a new triplex pump station with a 10’ dia. wet well below the water table. Challenges and related solutions to replacing and upgrading several small lift stations will be discussed along with methods used to retrofit existing lift stations with better access, install new pumps, and replace control panels with SCADA capabilities while retaining existing wet wells. Methods used to prioritize collection system rehab will be discussed in the context of funding repairs with limited capital from SWRCB and USDA grant programs.
Learning Objective(s):
After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:
• Understand the benefits of trenchless construction methods.
• Gain insight about constructing a wetwell using rolled steel casings in a drilled hole in lieu of extensive dewatering.
• Minimize construction costs and impacts related to underground construction while leveraging engineering analysis to prioritize where to spend limited capital.

Lessons Learned Rehabilitating a 105” Sewer Interceptor
The District’s $13 million, 3rd Street Interceptor Project in Oakland included slip lining 4,700 feet of 105-inch diameter interceptor sewer. Construction was planned over two years using five jacking pits. The contractor completed the work in only one year with three pits. Costs savings were 30% from previous crown lining methods.
Learning Objective(s):
After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:
• Participant will understand what alternatives and methods were used (crown lining and slip lining) for rehabilitation for large diameter sewer in live flow conditions, including lessons learned and costs.
• Participant will learn about various mitigation measures used to minimize community impacts.
• Participant will learn of what methods the contractor may use to accelerate the project schedule to make it a success.
